Uche Nwosu, the son-in-law of Senator Rochas Okorocha, the former governor of Imo State, seemed set to pick up the ticket of the All Progressives Congress APC, for the 2019 General Elections.
Who was there to stop him? Okorocha had the party in his hands, and even in Abuja, he had gotten the then newly elected Party National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole on his side.
Hope Uzodinma had just defected from the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, and didn’t have a structure to work with in the APC.
He was busy making empty promises to his fellow aspirants, especially those from Owerri zone, to back him up, with the promise of handing back the ticket of the party to them, when they collectively defeat Okorocha.
But even with their support, there was no way they could have pulled off the coup.
Then came Alhaji Ahmed Gulak. The man who changed the game.
For the first time, Imo people saw Okorocha vulnerable. Gulak did it. Ahmed Gulak drove Okorocha almost tears, when Okorocha stormed the house of the party’s former National Organising Secretary, Senator Osita Izunaso, in search of Gulak.
“Where is Gulak?” became a slogan across Imo, to mock Okorocha for what Gulak did to him.
But what if Gulak had succumbed to the alleged $2 million bribe, he said Okorocha offered him? Not many people would have turned down that offer.
By his decision to reject Okorocha’s money, and produce Uzodinma, who was the consensus Candidate, agreed upon by all the other aspirants, Gulak saved Imo State from becoming a private estate of the Okorocha family.
To many people, Gulak saved Imo from Okorocha. Had Uche Nwosu gotten the APC ticket, there would have been no way to stop Okorocha from succeeding himself through his son-in-law.
Even though Uzodinma’s claim to the ticket, is today being contested in the Supreme Court by Philip Umeadi, who is basing his suit on an earlier Supreme Court verdict, that announced Nwosu as the dual candidate of APC, and the Action Alliance AA, Gulak’s efforts, made Uche Nwosu’s disqualification for dual candidacy possible.
The news of his death came as a shock to Imo people, and they look up to the security operatives, to get to the root of the matter, and bring those behind his killing to justice.
