Okigwe Senate: No End In Sight in Battle To Find Benjamin Uwajumogu’s Replacement

It’s been over a year, since the untimely demise of the former Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, and Senator representing Okigwe zone, Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu, and the legal fireworks have yet to die down, in the search to find his replacement.

The All Progressives Congress APC, which was declared winner, in the December 5th 2020 By-election, is still battling to determine who is their authentic candidate, despite a recent Supreme Court ruling, which seemed to go in the favour of one of the major contenders in the party, Mr. Frank Ibezim.

The letter from Senator Ifeanyi Araraume to the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, pointing out that the Supreme Court ruling, which seemed in favour of Ibezim, was not as a result of the Abuja High Court ruling, by Justice Taiwo Taiwo, which ordered INEC to issue Araraume with certificate of return.

By this move, Okigwe people are set to brace up for yet another round of legal marathon, in the quest to determine the candidate of the APC.

Determining the candidate of the party, doesn’t however mean the APC is out of the woods, as the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, Chief Emmanuel Okweulonu, and All Progressives Grand Alliance APGA, Charles Onyirimba, are waiting at the tribunal, to argue the fact that on the day of the By-election, the APC did not have a candidate, since both Araraume and Ibezim, were disqualified by court rulings, on the eve of the Elections.

Okigwe people may have to wait a bit longer, before they finally find their voice in the Senate again.
